DIY Gold Hexagon Napkin Rings

November 30, 2020 by Cara Leave a Comment

Do you know what’s funny? I’m all into creating table settings this year, and I don’t even host Thanksgiving or Christmas at my house! Lol! I happen to be a sucker for it anyway, even if my family and I are the only ones that see it! ๐Ÿค“ Plus today’s DIY napkin rings can be used year-round, dressed up or down for a nice dinner or even hot dogs! Lol! That is the way I roll, just add gold and it immediately makes them fancy!๐Ÿ˜‰

DIY Gold Hexagon Napkin Ring

The DIY hexagon napkin rings pair really well with my DIY marble epoxy pumpkin chargers, but yet would look great without the table fully set as well or use them with the Christmas chargers I am currently pouring that I can’t wait to show you! EEK!! They would make a great hostess gift if you are heading to a friend’s home or family members for a holiday party!

DIY Napkin Rings

You can make a full set of napkin rings in about an hour’s time of actual work…a little longer when you count dry times of paint and wood glue! Aren’t those the best DIYs though, the ones that look so good but do not cost a lot or have in-depth, time-consuming steps?! Lol!

DIY Hexagon Napkin Rings

You could package them with a little bow and gift tag…boom, a quick gift to throw in a stocking or hand over to a hostess at a holiday party! I mean, I am holding out hope that in a month the holidays will be normal!๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Anyway, let me show you how to whip them up!

Materials for the DIY Napkin Rings

**Amazon links below are affiliate links!! An affiliate link is a link that allows me to receive a commission from any purchases that you make for a short time after clicking the link, at no extra cost to you! It is a real win-win for us both to keep my content coming at you for free!**

-1 – 1/4″ 1″x6′ pine lattice or 1/4″ poplar project board (ripped to 1″)

–miter saw

–filler primer

–gold spray paint

–wood glue

–painter’s tape

–sander

Cut List:

-6 – pine lattice cut (or poplar project board) @ 1 1/4″ long and beveled on both ends @ 30 degrees off square, ends not parallel (this makes 1 napkin ring so multiply this times however many napkin rings you want to make).

Making the DIY Gold Hexagon Napkin Rings

If you purchased pine lattice, it should be sized 1″ already, if you grabbed a poplar project board, it will need to be ripped down to 1″ wide.

Once it is ripped to size, you can cut your pieces.

Set the bevel on your miter saw to 30 degrees. If your miter saw doesn’t bevel, or you want to use the miter instead…as I did, you will need to set the miter to 30 degrees and you will cut each piece on its side.

DIY Napkin Rings - Gold Hexagon shape, cutting the beveled edges

I couldn’t find my clamp for my miter saw, and I don’t think it would have swung this far over even if I could have found it! Lol! So I used a piece of painter’s tape as a guide once I measured out where 1 1/4″ was on the saw.

The painter’s tape gives you a stop block so you don’t have to measure every time you cut one piece…that would take forever to make one napkin ring! And yes, I am well aware that it is not taped square to what I am cutting, but I was only lining up the very top edge.

Once you have the saw set up and tape in place, cut, cut, cut, and cut some more until you have all the pieces you need to complete as many napkin rings as you need for your table!

DIY Napkin Ring Pieces

Lay out a piece of painter’s tape and set the pieces beveled edge to beveled edge on the tape.

DIY Napkin Rings

Once you have all six on the tape, add wood glue in between each piece!

DIY Napkin Rings - how to make

Then roll the tape up completing the hexagon! Make sure all the pieces are lined up properly when the tape is around them.

DIY Hexagon Napkin Rings - How to make

How to make DIY Napkin Rings

Make sure the tape is tight around the hexagon to make sure the glue is able to set and hold them together! You can even wrap an extra piece of tape around to make sure!

DIY Hexagon Napkin RIngs

Whip up as many as you need to complete your table settings and then let them sit for a couple of hours and then come back and check on them! This gives the wood glue time to set. If you want to be sure, give it 2 or 3 hours…and then completely forget about them as I did!๐Ÿ˜‚

Sand them lightly to get rid of any scraggly pieces from the saw, and spray them with the filler primer. The filler primer is an important part of making them look like they are not made out of wood. It fills in all the pores and gives it a really smooth surface for the paint to adhere to. Use two coats! I learned about this from the AMAZING and INCREDIBLY talented Lizzy @thehouseoftimber! She is the scroll saw QUEEN!๐Ÿ˜ Make sure and follow her if you aren’t already…you will NOT be disappointed!!๐Ÿ˜Š

DIY Napkin Rings - Painting the napkin rings

Anyway, sand lightly after the two coats of primer, and then when you spray them with the gold paint they magically look like they are made of metal or plastic, definitely not wood! Lol!

Just a tip, you want to wait until the primer is fully dry before you sand, I messed mine up by rushing to sand them 20 minutes after I sprayed them! OY!! The primer feels dry to the touch really quickly, don’t be fooled as I was! Lol!

Here’s the gold spray paint I used on the napkin rings!

DIY Gold Napkin Rings

Let them dry and slide them on some beautiful napkins! Another tip, after testing everything on this napkin ring, I sanded using a stationary sander as opposed to trying to use a handheld sander, and it worked WAY better!! Then I just used a tiny bit of wood filler on the miters and they look way better!!

DIY Gold Hexagon Napkin Rings

DIY Napkin Rings

Pretty simple, huh?! I told ya, and TOTALLY worth it!

DIY Gold Hexagon Napkin Rings

Have any other ideas on what I could make into a hexagon shape? If you do, don’t tell me I already have too many hexagon projects! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜œ I’m kidding! Let me know in the comments below! Have you made these napkin rings? Send me an email with some pictures or tag me on social media, I LOVE seeing y’all’s projects from my tutorials…makes my day!!

DIY Wine Caddy

January 21, 2020 by Cara Leave a Comment

Hey hey! Are you ever searching for great DIY gift ideas? I am always looking for fun stuff to make as gifts and with Valentine’s Day coming up, and Birthdays throughout the year, I have the perfect DIY gift for anyone who loves serving wine! This DIY wine caddy (would you call it a wine server?) will help them effortlessly transport wine from the kitchen to the dining room or living room to share with guests!

DIY WIne Caddy

This is the perfect beginner project if you received tools at Christmas or just want to try your hand at woodworking! It is such a simple project that will have you trying out new skills and tools, or if you are already a skilled woodworker, this project can be whipped out in a matter of minutes!

DIY Wine Server

This DIY wine caddy is made using hobby boards from Home Depot which are only 1/2″ thick and made of poplar, but I could only imagine this made from an exotic hardwood species…it would be epic! So someone please make it out of gorgeous wood and send me pictures!๐Ÿ˜‰

DIY Wine Server Tray

I can’t wait to invite my girlfriends over to have some wine just so I can use my wine caddy!๐Ÿ˜‚ Are you ready to make one for your next get together? Let’s do it, I’ll show you how!๐Ÿ˜

Don’t have time to build this now, but want to save it for later? PIN IT!

That small commission helps me keep the plans on this site FREE, so thank you in advance if you make a purchase at one of my links!๐Ÿ˜‰

-1 – 1/2″x6″x4′ hobby board (they only show them in a large pkg online, but they sell them individually in store!)

-1 – 1/2″x2″x4′ hobby board (they only show them in a large pkg online, but they sell them individually in store!)

–3 1/2″ hole saw

–3/4″ Forstner bit

–miter saw

–jigsaw

–brad nailer

–3/4″ brad nails

–wood glue

Cut List: DIY Wine Caddy

-2 – 1/2″x6″ @ 22″

-2 – 1/2″ x 2″ @ 22″

Building the DIY Wine Caddy

Step 1

After cutting your boards to size, measure 4 3/4″ from the end of one of the 1/2″x6″ @ 22″. This is where you will place the drill bit of the 3 1/2″ hole saw (center of the hole saw). Drill the hole!

Step 2

Measure for the next hole that will round out your slot for the wine glasses. And drill the hole.

Step 3

Measure and draw lines for the wine glass slot. The slot will be cut with a jigsaw and if you clamp a straight board as a guide, you can cut it rather quickly…and straight!

DIY Wine Caddy - building the wine caddy

DIY Wine Server

It should look something like this, only I’m sure you measured better than I did so you weren’t off slightly on your circle! Lol!๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜…

DIY Wine Caddy

After some sanding and a little wood filler, it is hardly noticeable! ๐Ÿ˜…

Here is a Sketchup picture just to help you see the measurements!

Wine server

Step 4

Make sure and sand everything down really well if you need to…like I did!๐Ÿ˜† Also, you may want to stain the bottom board and side boards before gluing?! I did not do it this way, but it would have been a little easier than trying to get my sponge brush inside after it was built!

Glue the 1/2″x2″ pieces to the bottom board of the wine caddy(the one without any holes drilled in it).

DIY Wine Caddy

Step 5

Add the top, line up all the edges, make sure to use ample wood glue, and brad nail in place!

DIY Wine Caddy

Flip it over once you have the top nailed and nail the bottom as well!

Step 6

Use wood filler to fill in your nail holes…and any mistakes you made! Lol!

DIY Wine Server

Step 7

Stain or paint it the color of your choice! I used  Old Barn Milk Paint Stain in Weathered! IT IS MY FAVORITE STAIN EVER! (I am not sponsored by them, I do not make money off of that link, nor did they send me a free product, I pay for it the same as you and still love it that much!๐Ÿ˜‚) Not only is it the perfect warm grayish brown, but it has a built-in topcoat…and you want to know the BEST part…it’s safe and non-toxic! That is my kind of product right there!

Your wine caddy or wine server, or whatever you want to call this beauty…is DONE!

DIY Wine Server

This is not a bad gift at all! And if you use the same hobby boards I did, you are only at 14 dollars to make it, if you already have the expendables on hand (wood glue, sandpaper, etc). You better get cracking so you’ll have them made in time!๐Ÿ˜€

DIY Holiday Gnomes

January 20, 2020 by Cara Leave a Comment

If you were following along during my Christmas posts, you know that I am in LOVE with gnomes and although I didn’t get to post my DIY holiday gnomes for Christmas, as I was putting them away I was sad to see them go…so I decided, change the fabric a little and add hearts…and then I have Valentine Gnomes!

DIY Valentine Gnomes

How cute are they? And did I mention how inexpensive they are considering they are just a few pieces of fabric and plastic pellets! Yes! I am sure my family was thrilled to have new gnomes around the house! ๐Ÿ˜‚ No sewing, no socks, just some fabric, and hot glue! (Like that heart in the photo? Here’s the tutorial for the DIY Wooden Heart!)

DIY Holiday Gnomes

I thought to myself, but why stop at Valentine and Christmas gnomes? What about Easter gnomes? I could go through and make gnomes for EVERY HOLIDAY! Cue the eye rolls from my family, but whatever!๐Ÿ˜‚

DIY Easter Gnome -gnome made to look like an easter bunny

I have a few other gnome projects that I wanted to post before Christmas but I will be posting them over the next few days and trust me when I say that I am EXCITED to share them with you all! Even though it’s late for Christmas, you can just Pin them for next year!

DIY Holiday Gnomes - Easter Bunny Gnomes, Christmas Gnomes, Valentine Gnomes

Alright, now I will show you how to make them, and then you can make Valentine, Christmas, Easter or any other holiday gnomes you want…I am talking to you Fourth of July Gnomes!๐Ÿ˜œ

Materials Needed to make DIY Holiday Gnomes

Materials will make a couple of gnomes depending on how large you make them.

– 1/4 yard of fabric (body) – I found felt or other stiff materials work best for the body

-1/4 yard of coordinating fabric (hat) or sherpa for ears – I found that felt does not work that great for hats but that softer fabric works great for hats!

–1/4 yard of faux fur (beard)

–3/4″ wooden bead (nose)

–poly beads (filler)

-poly fiberfill

-a string of some sort

-hot glue gun

-pom poms, stickers or any other accessories you may want to embellish them.

Making the DIY Holiday Gnomes

Using a protractor, draw a circle on your fabric at the size you want! I used a 5″ circle to be the base of my gnome (my protractor was set at 2 1/2″).

DIY Holiday Gnomes

Cut the circle for your base!

DIY Holiday Gnomes

Then using the same fabric, cut a rectangle about 16 1/2″ long, and about 6″ tall. If you make your base circle smaller or larger you will need to adjust the rectangle as well! Just remember the diameter multiplied by 3.14 and then add a little extra to overlap!

DIY Holiday Gnomes - cutting the fabric

You will need to cut a few notches along the bottom of the rectangle so that it won’t bunch up on you as you glue it around the base circle! Look to the bottom of the rectangle.

DIY Holiday Gnomes - cutting notches in the fabric

I just hot glued around the bottom and tucked the fabric under the base, then I hot glued the two flaps over one another! You can also glue it on top of the base if it is easier and then flip it inside out! Works the same either way!

DIY Holiday Gnomes - making the base

The base is made!

Next, put a small amount of polyfill into the base you created. Then grab a bag, any kind of bag will work, I just had a bunch of these cellophane bags, so I used them. Fill up the bag about 1/4 – 1/2 of the way full and tie it off.

DIY Holiday Gnomes

DIY Holiday Gnomes

Drop it inside the gnome, add a little more stuffing around and above the bag, make sure the base sits level and doesn’t fall over, then tie the top closed with whatever string you have!

DIY Holiday Gnomes - Filling the base with poly beads and stuffing

Using the fur of your choice, cut a U shape out to create a beard! Make sure and cut the fur about an inch larger than the final size you want to be.

DIY Holiday Gnomes - making the beard

When cutting the beard down to size, make sure and flip the fur up away from where you are cutting so you don’t get blunt fur on the edge.

Fit it to the gnome base and glue!

Next, make that infamous gnome hat! They all need one! Lol! Pick the fabric you like best, and cut a triangle with a rounded bottom!

Flip the fabric down at the point and hot glue.

Next roll the hat up! Use hot glue along the edges to hold it together!

Make sure and check it for size. Fill the hat with a TINY bit of polyfill.

Then fold the bottom under and hot glue it to give it a prettier edge that won’t fray!

DIY Holiday Gnomes

Glue the hat onto the gnome! (If you are making the DIY Easter Gnome, scroll to the bottom to see how to make the ear hat!)

DIY Holiday Gnomes

No gnome is complete without a wooden nose! Using a 3/4″ wooden bead, hot glue it right under the edge of his hat.

Last but not least, give the gnome’s hat a pom-pom!

It’s DONE! Yep, no sewing, no socks, easy peasy and done!

How can you NOT love gnomes?!๐Ÿ˜‚

Making the bunny ears for the DIY Easter Gnomes

DIY Easter Bunny Gnomes

If you would like to use a pattern, CLICK HERE! I just freehanded the drawing on the pattern as I did on my fabric! though It does not have to be perfect to look great! Mine is totally imperfect, and I still love it!!๐Ÿ˜Š

Starting out, I just drew the shape I wanted onto the fabric. I folded it in half so that I could cut two at a time so they would be the same and drawing on the backside of the fabric worked best!

After cutting them out, hot glue all along the edge to connect the two pieces. Make sure and hot glue on the good side, the sherpa side. You will flip it in a minute!

DIY Easter Bunny Gnome - making the bunny ears for the gnome

Place the other set of ears on top and let it dry thoroughly before trying to turn it right side out! I went ahead and started cutting the pink for the ears while I was waiting.

DIY Holiday Gnomes - Easter Bunny Gnome

Once it is dry, flip it right side out!

DIY Easter bunny gnome

DIY Easter Bunny Gnome

Then, take the pink of the ears and hot glue the edges so you don’t see ugly cuts of the fabric.

DIY Easter Bunny Gnome - making the bunny ears

Glue the pink to the ears. Make sure and press it down well!

DIY Holiday Gnomes - Easter Bunny Gnome

After gluing the pink of the ears, check the fit on your gnome base, and then fold the bottom of the ‘hat’ part of the ears and glue it to give it a finished look and to get a perfect size and fit.

DIY Holiday Gnomes - Easter Bunny Gnome

DIY Easter Bunny Gnome

I used pipe cleaners to make the ears stand up! I used two in each ear and folded them in half. I also added just a tiny bit of polyfill to the hat part of the ears!

DIY Holiday Gnomes - Easter Bunny Gnome

DIY Easter Gnome

Once you have the ears stiffened with pipe cleaners and the correct size you want, hot glue the bunny ears to the base!

DIY Easter Gnome

Add any embellishments that you would like! I cut a flower out of pink felt and blue fabric, glued it on, and bam cutest bunny gnome you ever did see!๐Ÿ˜

DIY Easter Gnome -gnome made to look like an easter bunny

Oy, just typing this post makes me want to go make MORE DIY HOLIDAY GNOMES! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™ˆ I just think they are ADORABLE! If you make any, I WANT TO SEE THEM!

DIY Christmas Gnome Pillow Cover

December 23, 2019 by Cara 1 Comment

Hey, hey, hey! Today’s the day! Day 6 of my projects that is, and I am bringing you this easy no-sew DIY Christmas gnome pillow cover that I loved at Pottery Barn but just couldn’t bring myself to spend the 40 they were asking for it! Plus, it sold out so even if I had lost my mind and wanted to spend that kind of money on ONE pillow cover, I couldn’t get it anyway! Lol!

DIY Christmas Gnome Pillow Cover

*And I say to myself as I am editing pictures, “I sure hope Santa brings me a handheld steamer this year so I can get the wrinkles out of this cushion!”๐Ÿ˜‚

I realize my version is chubby compared to theirs! ๐Ÿ˜… But you can make yours as skinny or ‘healthy’ as you want! I don’t know what it is but I am ALL about the gnomes this year and Pottery Barn kinda sealed the gnome love for me when they put them on everything! I could not have been happier to see gnomes on stockings and tree skirts…they even have gnome bedding! ๐Ÿ˜

DIY Gnome Pillow Cover

So, that was just to forwarn you about the fact that there are a few other gnome projects coming over the next couple of days! Yay! Plus, this cold weather has me wanting to cuddle up inside with a good movie, hot cocoa, and a craft so these gnome crafts are the perfect way to have it all! Lol!

Alright, I am SUPER behind on 25 DIYs of Christmas but that doesn’t mean I am giving up! I am going to throw as many DIYs at you until the 25th of December…and thereafter! Make sure and save them for next year if you don’t have time to make them this year!

DIY No Sew Gnome Pillow Cover

“Do you wanna make a Christmas gnome pillow cover? Or make a gnome with a body of beans?” That sang in my best “Do you wanna build a snowman?” voice! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Anyway, the best part about this adorable pillow cover is that he can adorn your couch all winter too!

Amazon Links below are affiliate links, which means that if you click a link and you make a purchase after clicking that link, I make a small percentage of that sale at no extra cost to you! It’s a pretty sweet deal to help me keep this content coming at you for free! Thanks in advance for supporting my little ole blog! All other links are just to be helpful in finding the same items I used!๐Ÿ˜‰

Materials:

–pillow cover – Amazon has a ton of options even cheaper than the one I bought at Hobby Lobby or you can throw one together on the sewing machine, but for the 6 dollars I paid for this one, I didn’t want to spend the time making one!

–Red felt (body) – I bought a 1/4 yard (to have extra to make other gnomes! Lol!) but since you will only use a 9″x9″ square of it, you can purchase a felt sheet which is 9″x12″

–White faux fur or white felt (beard) – again one sheet is enough, but they also sell it by the yard…to make more gnomes! Lol!

–gray ticking stripe fabric (hat)

–Fabric Fusion Glue (or you can grab the sampler bottle three-pack at Hobby Lobby as I did)

–pom pom (hat)

–wooden ball (nose) I couldn’t find them online at Hobby Lobby, but they are 1.99 for a bag of 6…I am pretty sure!

–polyfill if you want to stuff the hat ever so slightly as I did.

Making the DIY Christmas Gnome Pillow Cover

If you would like a pattern, I have included mine here for download, it is super easy to cut the shapes yourself though, and my patterns are not anything fancy! Lol! They are hand-drawn from the actual pieces I cut, so they are not perfect! Luckily, you can use them for size reference and make them as perfect or as imperfect as you’d like!

Christmas Gnome Pillow Patterns

Gather all your crafting supplies! Maybe grab a cup of hot cocoa, and turn on your favorite Christmas movie! This craft can be done sitting on the living room floor! That is part of the reason I LOVE this as well!

DIY Gnome Pillow Cover

Okay, I cut all my designs and made sure of how everything was going to look before I glued a thing!

I first cut the body out of the red felt! I cut a square out of the felt, then folded it in half and rounded the bottom corners off, and tapered the top!

DIY Christmas Gnome Pillow CoverSorry, the pics are a little dark, I was working hard late at night! Lol!

Once I had the body how I liked it, I measured to make sure it was centered and laid it down exactly where I was going to glue it. I didn’t glue it just yet!

DIY Gnome Pillow Cover - Christmas Gnome Pillow

Don’t mind the crazy hand, I was on the phone with my sister while I was making this!๐Ÿ˜‚

Next, I cut my faux fur into a U shape to make the beard! I found after a bunch of faux fur projects, it is best to cut the fur about an inch or two larger than you want the beard, then you can push the fur upwards away from where you are cutting to keep the fur scraggly. If you don’t do this the fur will be bluntly cut and look silly at the bottom!

DIY Gnome Pillow - Christmas Gnome Pillow

I know the pictures seem like they are upside down, my video camera was overhead and now it’s backward to y’all…I can’t get it right! ๐Ÿ™ˆ

Next, make the hat! I placed the hat fabric down to make sure it was large enough to cover the beard and red felt, then drew out the basic shape I wanted!

DIY Gnome Pillow Cover - making the gnome hat

DIY Gnome Pillow

Then I cut out the shape that I had drawn onto the fabric!

DIY Gnome Pillow Cover - cutting the hat

DIY Gnome Pillow fitting the hat in place!

I had to check the nose to make sure…

DIY Gnome Pillow Cover

Now I was ready to glue it all in place!

DIY Gnome Pillow Cover

Of course, you can sew this on instead of gluing it, but I am NOT a seamstress, though I wish I was!๐Ÿ˜ฉ So glue for me, for now! Lol!

Glue the beard in place.

DIY Christmas Gnome Pillow cover

And, now make sure to wrap the hat around the sides of the red felt and fur to finish off the edge there. I let this sit for a while to let the glue dry a little.

DIY Gnome Pillow - Making the gnome

DIY No Sew Christmas gnome pillow

After it set for a little while, I added ever so small an amount of polyfill batting, I mean a tiny bit! Just so there wasn’t a major drop off from the fur to the rest of the hat.

Adding polyfill to the DIY gnome pillow cover

Then I rolled the edge under slightly and glued it down, all the way around!GLuing the gnomes hat on the gnome pillow cover

Gluing the hat down on the gnome pillow cover

It gives it a finished look without having to sew. You could also glue the hat about a 1/4″ inside and leave a frayed look around the edge! I think that would look really cute as well! You can make it your own! Do whatever it is that YOU like!๐Ÿ˜Š

I had to hold the gnome hat a little while until the glue started to take.

DIY Gnome Pillow Cover - making the hat

Look at those gnarly fingernails! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ I had just stained my DIY ice skates if you must know! ๐Ÿ˜ Oy!

And then I sat back and admired my work! He is looking really good my little holiday Gnomeo!๐Ÿ˜ I added the nose with some hot glue!

I used the unfinished wood bead for the nose, but you can use a pompom instead if you want it to be soft!

DIY Gnome Pillow Cover - adding the nose

I added the pompom to the top of his hat and bata bing, bata boom, DONE! Fill that pillow cover and make it a dang beautiful DIY gnome pillow if I’ve ever seen one!

DIY Gnome Pillow Cover

Oh, I love snuggling with my little Gnomeo! ๐Ÿ˜‚ I really do laugh every time I look at this little guy’s face, and that makes me happy that my projects can bring happiness to someone…even if it’s me!๐Ÿ˜‚

DIY Ice Skate Decor

December 22, 2019 by Cara Leave a Comment

Alright, I am still way behind on my 25 DIYs of Christmas! I am going to continue posting them right up through Christmas though because most of them can be made after Christmas to use as winter decor or they are gift ideas, and gifts can be given year-round! Lol! For instance, this DIY Ice Skate Decor can be used long after Christmas and through the winter!

DIY Ice Skate Decor

I learned with this project that it is absolutely my (non)skill and not the saw when it comes to scrolling work! Lol! I cut these ice skates on my grandad’s DeWalt scroll saw, which as you may or may not know, Lizzy from The House of Timber on Instagram worked absolute MAGIC on that Dewalt saw…but as it turns out, it is actually Lizzy’s skill, not the saw! ???? I tried though, so there’s that! And they don’t look THAT bad! If I would have sanded a little more, they would probably look really good!????

Ice Skate Decor

Even if they aren’t perfect, I LOVE the ice skates decorating the swag wreath, you know I picked up this fresh greenery at Walmart for 5 bucks! It was a bouquet in the floral section! It smells amazing of course!????

DIY Ice Skate Decor on front door wreath

Don’t mind my door either that needs to be refinished! ???? It’s 303rd on the list of stuff that needs to be done around here! I’ll get to it…that’s my motto!????

It is a really fun craft that you can easily do, once you cut them out, you can adorn them while enjoying some family time because they really don’t take any effort! Just stain, paint, drill holes and attach fur and string! Boom, cutest wintery ice skates to accessorize any wreath, entryway hooks or wall decor!

I cannot help but smile every time I walk in my front door, and that is a successful project in my eyes! ????

Want to make a set yourself but don’t have time? Save it for later! PIN IT!

DIY Ice Skate Decor for Wreath

Let’s get your’s made too!????

I have provided the THE PATTERN FOR THE ICE SKATES so you can make them too! If you are a patient person, you will have no problem cutting them out on the scroll saw! You can even use a jigsaw, I honestly think a jigsaw is easier than a scroll saw…well in some ways! Lol!

-2 scrap pieces of 1/4″ plywood (8×8) or if this is the first project you are doing, you can purchase a 1/4″x 2’x2′ project panel at your local hardware store.

– Drill and 5/16″ drill bit

–faux fur fabric or ribbon

–1/4″ cotton cord – I purchased mine at Hobby Lobby but can’t find it on their website – it was from the area with the jute rope and cotton rope but the cost was only 4.99 and I was able to use a 40% off coupon on it!

-stain/paint of your choice

–scroll saw or jigsaw

–stencil if you want to paint snowflakes

–spray adhesive – I found it cheapest in-store at Walmart!

–painter’s tape

Making your DIY Ice Skate Decor

Ice Skate Christmas Decor

Step 1

Print out your pattern for the ice skates! Get it above if you haven’t already!

Step 2

Use painter’s tape to cover both sides of one of the scrap pieces of 1/4″ plywood, and on only one side of the other piece! Then use the spray adhesive to ‘glue’ two painter’s taped sides together and then use the spray adhesive again on the one other painter’s taped side to attach your pattern to that piece of plywood. You are going to cut the two skates at the same time so they will be identical!

I was working on like 5 crafts at the same time, so when I threw the pattern on the wood and got it ready to cut, I totally forgot to take a picture or video this step! I apologize, but hope you understand the concept!????

I actually forgot to tape the front of mine, and when I peeled my pattern off the top, it didn’t leave a residue! I was shocked, but I wouldn’t risk it if I were you…just use the painter’s tape to be sure!

Step 3

Cut your ice skates out!

Now that you have the base of your ice skate decor, gather the rest of your supplies!

DIY Ice Skate Decor - The supplies

Step 4

Stain or paint the skates! I did my skates in this order, but you should probably drill the holes very first!????

I used Weathered Stain by Old Barn Living, it may be MY FAVORITE STAIN of all time!!

DIY Ice skate decor - staining the skates

Staining the Ice Skate Decor

Step 5

Drill the holes for the laces!

Using a scrap piece of wood to keep from drilling into my table, I just measured and drilled 4 holes along the ice skates. I then realized there needed to be another, and came back and drilled an extra one at the top!

The first hole is drilled at 1 5/8″ from the top of the skate and all the holes are 1/2″ from the front of the skate, and then they were 3/4″ apart.

Drilling the holes for the shoe laces on the Ice skate decor

Step 6

Paint the white accents on the one skate, or both if you like that look better!

DIY Ice skate Decor - painting the white accents on the skates

Using a stencil paint the snowflakes…the trick to a stencil is to have VERY LITTLE paint on your paintbrush and slowly build up the color! I went too heavy on my first snowflake! Oops!

DIY Ice skate decor - painting the snowflakes on the ice skates

Step 7

Once I painted the first snowflake I set it aside to let it dry, and started lacing the stained skate!

Start at the bottom and only pull half of your string through the lace holes. Leave the string longer on the bottom! (Remember how I drilled 4 holes at first and then decided I needed the 5th hole, this is when I only had 4 holes!) But don’t feed your string through the 5th hole, stop at the 4th!

Lacing the DIY Ice Skates

Step 8

Bring the long string from the bottom up through the laces to the top.

DIY Ice Skate Decor - lacing the ice skate

Ice skate decor

Bring that lace from the backside through the last (5th) hole, and tie the two strings together on the front of the skate!

Tying the laces on the DIY Ice Skate Decor

Step 9

Add the fur to the top of the skate with hot glue! I have used this faux fur a lot this holiday season and one trick I have learned is to cut your fur about an inch larger than you need and then along the bottom, push the fur upwards when you cut it down to size. Then when you flip the fur back down, it is uneven and realistic looking instead of being bluntly cut!

Adding the fur to the top of the ice skate!

Step 10

Repeat to finish the other ice skate!

Step 11

Using a long piece of your string, cut it to the size that you want and hot glue it to the back of both skates!

DIY Dartboard Cabinet

December 13, 2019 by Cara 1 Comment

Project number 4 is here! This is one of my favorite projects out of my 25 days of a DIY Christmas! My boys have been wanting me to make this DIY dartboard cabinet forever and ever! Well, here they go, an early Christmas present! Lol!

DIY Dartboard Cabinet

DIY Dartboard Cabinet

The best part is, I didn’t have to make the dartboard, just the cabinet, so you can throw it together in a couple of hours! What a GREAT gift idea, ready in a couple of hours! Sweeeeetttt!

DIY Dartboard Cabinet

Want to see the other projects I’ve posted for the 25 Days of a DIY Christmas?

Let’s not waste any time getting started, if you are like me you are already a little behind so we don’t have much time…Christmas is in less than 2 weeks! What?! Yea, we better get ON IT, let’s go!

Don’t have time to build this now? PIN IT for later!

**AMAZON links below are AFFILIATE LINKS (all other links are not but I include them anyway to help you find the same items I used ????). Affiliate links are links that pay me a small percentage if you make a purchase, at no extra cost to you! I always appreciate your support by purchasing through the links, this helps me keep my content come at ya free of charge!

Materials:

–18″ dartboard

-1 – 1x4x8

-1 – 1x6x6 or a scrap piece of 1×6 ( you will only need 26 1/2″)

-1 – 1x2x6 or 2 scrap pieces of 1×2 ( you will only need 2 – 8″ pieces)

– 1 – 1/2″ 2’x4′ sheet of plywood

-12 ft of 1/4″ x 1 1/2″ lattice (from the molding section)

–2 knobs

–4 small hinges

–double magnetic latch

–chalkboard paint

–Kreg jig

–1″ Kreg screws

–brad nailer

–drill

–1/8″ drill bit

–wood glue

–saw

–white paint marker

Cut List:

-1 – 1/2″ piece of plywood @ 23″ x 23″ (back)

-2 – 1/2″ pieces of plywood @ 11 5/16″ x 22 7/8″(doors)

-2 – 1×4 @ 24 1/2″(frame)

-2 – 1×4 @ 23″ (frame)

-1 – 1×6 @ 26 1/2″ (top)

-4 – 1/4″ lattice strips @ 19 7/8″ (door molding)

-4 – 1/4″ lattice strips @ 11 5/16″ (door molding)

-2 – 1×2 @ 8″ (dart holders)

Building the DIY Dartboard Cabinet

To start I ripped down my plywood to 23″x 23″ so that I could get by with using one 1×4 instead of needing two! If you don’t have a table saw to rip the plywood you can use a clamp and a board as a guide, or the Kreg Rip-cut works really well! Or have Home Depot or Lowe’s do it for you when you purchase your plywood, just know that they won’t be the prettiest cuts!????

DIY Dartboard Cabinet

Next, cut the frame boards. To attach the frame boards, you will need to drill pocket holes in the back plywood. If you don’t have a Kreg jig, you could get by with using a brad nailer and wood glue, it is just really hard to shoot brad nails into 1/2″ plywood without any of them getting wonky and blowing out the side!

Using your Kreg jig, set your jig to 1/2″, then set your drill bit to 1/2″ and clamp your board into place. (sorry the pics are blurry, they are from the video)

Glueing the frame on the DIY dartboard cabinet

Flip it over and brad nail the side so they don’t lean inward.

I love how that was JUST cut off from the frame of the camera! ???? Hopefully, you can still figure out what I am doing!

Add the 1×6 (ripped down to 4″) to the top of the frame. Center it, then use glue and brad nails to attach it!

Next, cut your lattice strips for the doors. Attach them with wood glue and 5/8″ brad nails. Make sure the depth of your brad nails is just right so they don’t come out on the other side!

DIY Dartboard Cabinet - framing the doors with molding

DIY Dartboard Cabinet

Once the doors are framed out on the front, you can dress them up on the back! To make your dart holders, you will need to drill holes in the center of your 1×2 at 2″, 4″, and 6″. They will be drilled into the 3/4″ side of the 1×2.

DIY Dartboard Cabinet - drilling thr holes for the darts

Then glue the 1x2s onto the backside of one of the doors. Make sure to center them on the door.

DIY Dartboard Cabinet - gluing the dart holders to the door

Paint or stain your pieces at this point!

Then, using painter’s tape, tape off a section of the door that you did not place your dart holders on, and paint it with chalkboard paint. This will be your scorekeeper.

DIY Dartboard Cabinet - painting the chalkboard scorekeeper

Attach the doors to the frame with your small hinges. I used them flat since that is the simplest way you can use hinges! Lol! Also because it gives it a little character if you ask me! (no photo, sorry…my hubby did this for me while I was sleeping)

Attach the magnetic latch so that it will hold the doors steady while you drill your holes for your knobs! I just used a screwdriver for this part…and I had help from the best helper! Lol!

Adding the magnetic latch for the diy dartboard cabinet

Measure and drill your holes to attach your knobs!

DIY Dartboard Cabinet - adding the knobs

I like to use the yellow painter’s tape for marking and then drilling holes because I can see through it to see my mark! And yes, I COULD just mark on the tape but I NEVER remember to put the tape down first, and then I don’t want to go back and measure again! This is what works best for me!

DIY Dartboard Cabinet

Screw the knobs into place!DIY Dartboard Cabinet

Hang that sucker on the wall! I just screwed it into the studs from the front side before hanging the dartboard inside. Don’t mind that this is an incredibly blurry picture my little one took for me! ???? You can see the two black spots, those are the screws into the studs! You could use a hangman if you are giving it as a gift!

DIY Dartboard Cabinet

Then I put a screw to hang the dartboard inside the cabinet, that way we can change out the dartboard once it has too many holes!

And that is all there is to it! It is finito! ????

DIY Dartboard Cabinet

Love this project and think your friends or family would like it too? I would love for you to share it with them!

DIY Winter Christmas Wreath

December 10, 2019 by Cara Leave a Comment

Woohoo! It’s day three! Maybe I should say project three since I am a wee bit behind and it is supposed to be day 9 of the series! Lol! I will catch up at some point I am sure of it, maybe by next Christmas!๐Ÿ˜‚ Today’s project is a DIY winter Christmas wreath! I love the metal hoop wreaths but just couldn’t find exactly what I was looking for! I surely made it though!

DIY Christmas Wreath

Here is my DIY Christmas wreath without the mirror behind it, and I really can’t decide which I like better honestly! Lol! There is something so simple without the mirror, but there is that layered feeling with the mirror that I love!

DIY WInter Christmas Wreath above mantel

Oh, and LOOK at my cute little gnome painting! My youngest son painted it for me and I couldn’t love anything more than this right now! As my 25 days of a DIY Christmas progresses you will see that I am completely smitten with all things holiday gnome! Lol!

Back to this beautiful wreath though! I love how it has a modern farmhouse style to it but yet with a few added touches, it could fit with any decor!

And, I tallied all the supplies up to see how much it cost, it came in at a grand total of 37 dollars! That’s really not bad for how large and full it is, I mean I’ve seen smaller, skimpier ones for more expensive!

DIY Christmas Wreath that doubles as a winter wreath

Plus, this was the look I was going for that I couldn’t find anywhere. I wanted a wire hoop wreath, but not one as simple as most of them that I have seen. I also love decor that can stay up through winter and this is perfect for that!

DIY Christmas Wreath

Alright, here are the instructions! The video will be below and the step by step post is following!

Don’t have time to make this now? PIN IT for later!

DIY Christmas Wreath

Materials:

1 Large metal hoop – 19 inches

1 Medium Metal hoop – 14 inches

Ribbon of your choice (mine is from Walmart but they don’t offer it online – it is in the Christmas section though)

4 large stems of your choice (mine has 2 glittery Eucalyptus from Hobby Lobby which I could not locate online, here is a link to the closest thing I could find to it: Silver Eucalyptus and 2 glittery pine with pinecones from Target)

4 small stems of your choice (mine has 4 glittery pine with pine cone stems from Hobby Lobby- of course, they don’t have the ones I used online…and I can’t find another one like it online either)

2 small stems (mine are glittery lamb’s ear)

1 stem of champagne balls (mine are from Target and they are not online, ugh!)

floral wire

wire cutters

scissors

hot glue gun

Making the DIY Christmas Wreath

Gather all your supplies and get your hot glue gun ready! I love making wreaths especially on a cold winter day when I am stuck inside, it’s an easy craft that makes a big statement!

Step 1

Tape the two hoops together at the top. I used packaging tape because I knew it would be covered. Even if you want to leave the top without greenery, you can still cover the tape with the ribbon.

Making the DIY Christmas Wreath

I played around with my greenery for a few minutes before actually putting it all together to get an idea of how I wanted them to be placed. This is crucial and you need to do this as well…even if you forget what you JUST put together and attach the wrong stems first!๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ˜…

I cut the stems down to a manageable length and started working. Yes, I was supposed to attach the eucalyptus first and had to go back and correct myself! Lol!

Making the DIY Christmas Wreath

Adding Eucalyptus and pine to the christmas wreath

Once I had them where I wanted them, I used the floral wire to attach them to the metal hoop.

DIY winter wreath on metal hoop

And then a little hot glue to make sure they don’t go anywhere!

Hot gluing the DIY christmas wreath

I then worked up the sides to make sure and attach some of the greenery with wire and hot glue so it didn’t get too heavy and hang weird!

Adding the greenery to the DIY christmas / winter wreath

Hot gluing the greenery to the metal hoop wreath

Next, I added the little twigs. I took stems out of the lamb’s ear picks because I didn’t want that much, just a touch! I hot glued them and then wrapped the wire around all the little stems once I had them all hot glued in.

Making the DIY Christmas Wreath with metal hoop

DIY Wintery Christmas Wreath

Making the Bottom Bow for the DIY Christmas Wreath

Take whatever ribbon you like, wired ribbon preferably, and I only wanted 2 pieces on each side…not sure what you call them on a bow?! Lol! I made a video while making this wreath so the step by step pictures are not as great as they should be, but if you want to see step by step photos, I used the same method as when I made the bow for THIS WREATH. Check that out for help until I get the video uploaded!

I basically find start one side of the bow, and figure out the size by that. Make 2 loops big loops and pinch them in the middle.

MAking the bow for the DIY CHristmas wreath

Making the bow for the DIY Christmas Wreath

MAking the bow for the DIY Christmas Wreath

Use the floral wire to hold the middle together while you wrap another small piece of ribbon over the center and hot glue it on the back.

Making the bow for the metal hoop wreath

Hot glue another ribbon on the back to hang down. Brain fart again as to what they are called! Tails? I don’t know, I am typing this with my eyes half-closed falling asleep so yeah, my brain isn’t working that well…oh the typos I will find tomorrow! ๐Ÿ™ƒ

Making the bow for the DIY Christmas wreath

Attach the bow to the bottom of the wreath. I used wire and a lot of hot glue!

Attaching the bow to the DIY Christmas wreath

Placing the Greenery at the Top of the Wreath

Again, I kind of had to play around with the stems to get them to lay how I liked them. I just used the small stems, one on each side, and bent them downward. Then I added a couple of pieces of the same lamb’s ear I used at the bottom (not the whole pick, just a couple of pieces pulled out). This was all out of the frame of my video so I don’t have any photos to share. Ugh! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Add the wire and hot glue the picks into place.

I then wrapped a piece of ribbon around the stems and hot glued it over them to hold it all in place.

Adding the stems to the top of the DIY Christmas Wreath

I stuck a piece of gold balls on each side of the ribbon while the hot glue was still wet. Viola!

Adding the gold balls to the Christmas wreath

I thought I was done at this point, but I had a few stems left and thought I would try adding them along the bottom of the smaller hoop, and I kinda loved it! So you could leave it right here, or you could add a little extra as I did!

Laying out the second layer on the DIY Christmas Wreath

Making the DIY Christmas Wreath

DIY Christmas Wreath

Once I had it how I wanted it, I used wire to wrap it all together, and then hot glued it into place!

I added one more small piece of ribbon to cover where the stems cross and it was DONE! And I LOVE it!
