DIY Christmas Gnome Pillow Cover

December 23, 2019 by Cara 1 Comment

Hey, hey, hey! Today’s the day! Day 6 of my projects that is, and I am bringing you this easy no-sew DIY Christmas gnome pillow cover that I loved at Pottery Barn but just couldn’t bring myself to spend the 40 they were asking for it! Plus, it sold out so even if I had lost my mind and wanted to spend that kind of money on ONE pillow cover, I couldn’t get it anyway! Lol!

DIY Christmas Gnome Pillow Cover

*And I say to myself as I am editing pictures, “I sure hope Santa brings me a handheld steamer this year so I can get the wrinkles out of this cushion!”๐Ÿ˜‚

I realize my version is chubby compared to theirs! ๐Ÿ˜… But you can make yours as skinny or ‘healthy’ as you want! I don’t know what it is but I am ALL about the gnomes this year and Pottery Barn kinda sealed the gnome love for me when they put them on everything! I could not have been happier to see gnomes on stockings and tree skirts…they even have gnome bedding! ๐Ÿ˜

DIY Gnome Pillow Cover

So, that was just to forwarn you about the fact that there are a few other gnome projects coming over the next couple of days! Yay! Plus, this cold weather has me wanting to cuddle up inside with a good movie, hot cocoa, and a craft so these gnome crafts are the perfect way to have it all! Lol!

Alright, I am SUPER behind on 25 DIYs of Christmas but that doesn’t mean I am giving up! I am going to throw as many DIYs at you until the 25th of December…and thereafter! Make sure and save them for next year if you don’t have time to make them this year!

DIY No Sew Gnome Pillow Cover

“Do you wanna make a Christmas gnome pillow cover? Or make a gnome with a body of beans?” That sang in my best “Do you wanna build a snowman?” voice! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Anyway, the best part about this adorable pillow cover is that he can adorn your couch all winter too!

Amazon Links below are affiliate links, which means that if you click a link and you make a purchase after clicking that link, I make a small percentage of that sale at no extra cost to you! It’s a pretty sweet deal to help me keep this content coming at you for free! Thanks in advance for supporting my little ole blog! All other links are just to be helpful in finding the same items I used!๐Ÿ˜‰

Materials:

–pillow cover – Amazon has a ton of options even cheaper than the one I bought at Hobby Lobby or you can throw one together on the sewing machine, but for the 6 dollars I paid for this one, I didn’t want to spend the time making one!

–Red felt (body) – I bought a 1/4 yard (to have extra to make other gnomes! Lol!) but since you will only use a 9″x9″ square of it, you can purchase a felt sheet which is 9″x12″

–White faux fur or white felt (beard) – again one sheet is enough, but they also sell it by the yard…to make more gnomes! Lol!

–gray ticking stripe fabric (hat)

–Fabric Fusion Glue (or you can grab the sampler bottle three-pack at Hobby Lobby as I did)

–pom pom (hat)

–wooden ball (nose) I couldn’t find them online at Hobby Lobby, but they are 1.99 for a bag of 6…I am pretty sure!

–polyfill if you want to stuff the hat ever so slightly as I did.

Making the DIY Christmas Gnome Pillow Cover

If you would like a pattern, I have included mine here for download, it is super easy to cut the shapes yourself though, and my patterns are not anything fancy! Lol! They are hand-drawn from the actual pieces I cut, so they are not perfect! Luckily, you can use them for size reference and make them as perfect or as imperfect as you’d like!

Christmas Gnome Pillow Patterns

Gather all your crafting supplies! Maybe grab a cup of hot cocoa, and turn on your favorite Christmas movie! This craft can be done sitting on the living room floor! That is part of the reason I LOVE this as well!

DIY Gnome Pillow Cover

Okay, I cut all my designs and made sure of how everything was going to look before I glued a thing!

I first cut the body out of the red felt! I cut a square out of the felt, then folded it in half and rounded the bottom corners off, and tapered the top!

DIY Christmas Gnome Pillow CoverSorry, the pics are a little dark, I was working hard late at night! Lol!

Once I had the body how I liked it, I measured to make sure it was centered and laid it down exactly where I was going to glue it. I didn’t glue it just yet!

DIY Gnome Pillow Cover - Christmas Gnome Pillow

Don’t mind the crazy hand, I was on the phone with my sister while I was making this!๐Ÿ˜‚

Next, I cut my faux fur into a U shape to make the beard! I found after a bunch of faux fur projects, it is best to cut the fur about an inch or two larger than you want the beard, then you can push the fur upwards away from where you are cutting to keep the fur scraggly. If you don’t do this the fur will be bluntly cut and look silly at the bottom!

DIY Gnome Pillow - Christmas Gnome Pillow

I know the pictures seem like they are upside down, my video camera was overhead and now it’s backward to y’all…I can’t get it right! ๐Ÿ™ˆ

Next, make the hat! I placed the hat fabric down to make sure it was large enough to cover the beard and red felt, then drew out the basic shape I wanted!

Then I cut out the shape that I had drawn onto the fabric!

I had to check the nose to make sure…

Now I was ready to glue it all in place!

DIY Gnome Pillow Cover

Of course, you can sew this on instead of gluing it, but I am NOT a seamstress, though I wish I was!๐Ÿ˜ฉ So glue for me, for now! Lol!

Glue the beard in place.

And, now make sure to wrap the hat around the sides of the red felt and fur to finish off the edge there. I let this sit for a while to let the glue dry a little.

After it set for a little while, I added ever so small an amount of polyfill batting, I mean a tiny bit! Just so there wasn’t a major drop off from the fur to the rest of the hat.

Adding polyfill to the DIY gnome pillow cover

Then I rolled the edge under slightly and glued it down, all the way around!GLuing the gnomes hat on the gnome pillow cover

Gluing the hat down on the gnome pillow cover

It gives it a finished look without having to sew. You could also glue the hat about a 1/4″ inside and leave a frayed look around the edge! I think that would look really cute as well! You can make it your own! Do whatever it is that YOU like!๐Ÿ˜Š

I had to hold the gnome hat a little while until the glue started to take.

DIY Gnome Pillow Cover - making the hat

Look at those gnarly fingernails! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ I had just stained my DIY ice skates if you must know! ๐Ÿ˜ Oy!

And then I sat back and admired my work! He is looking really good my little holiday Gnomeo!๐Ÿ˜ I added the nose with some hot glue!

I used the unfinished wood bead for the nose, but you can use a pompom instead if you want it to be soft!

DIY Gnome Pillow Cover - adding the nose

I added the pompom to the top of his hat and bata bing, bata boom, DONE! Fill that pillow cover and make it a dang beautiful DIY gnome pillow if I’ve ever seen one!

DIY Gnome Pillow Cover

Oh, I love snuggling with my little Gnomeo! ๐Ÿ˜‚ I really do laugh every time I look at this little guy’s face, and that makes me happy that my projects can bring happiness to someone…even if it’s me!๐Ÿ˜‚

DIY Tree Card Holder Made of Tassels

December 11, 2018 by Cara 2 Comments

It’s December and you know what that means? Well, it’s time for Christmas, Christmas, and more Christmas! Lol! And, although I don’t have very many holiday posts…I do have one today! I am so excited to bring you the tutorial for this diy tree card holder made of tassels to round up and display your holiday cards! I LOVE receiving Christmas cards in the mail…don’t ask me why, but I do…and I mean get really excited to check the mail daily! ???? I always enjoy looking for new ways to hang them when they start arriving as well, and this year I had the cutest little idea that I feel you could actually manage to incorporate year round into your decor if you wanted!

DIY Tassel Tree Card Holder

Sometimes when it’s cold outside and it gets dark so early, I enjoy an indoor craft that I can be doing while watching a Christmas movie and drinking hot cocoa with the kids! And that’s just what I did when I made my first tassel tree card holder, then I loved it so much I thought I better make a tutorial and share it with you all! So I even made another one and created a video for you all to make it that much easier to create one yourself! After all those hours slaving behind the camera…PLEASE go watch it and subscribe to my YouTube channel! ???? The photo tutorial is still down below as usual so take a look at that if there’s something I missed in the video!

DIY Tassel Tree Card Holder Video

Video will be coming soon…my phone apparently records in 4K and so my computer was having a really hard time editing it when I would speed the video up, so I have to start the editing process all the way over and convert them to lower resolutions! It will take a couple days! So in the mean time, below is the step by step tutorial to help you create the tree card holder!

Here is a photo without the garland if you wanted to just use it as a tassel tree, or you could add string lights, I recently found these really cute ones with clips already on them to use to hold the cards! There are so many options…I can’t wait to see what you all come up with in addition to what I have done here! ???? If you are looking for another option of card holder, I made this DIY Christmas Tree Card Holder last year!

Note: Links below may be affiliate links! This just means, if you choose to make a purchase after clicking one of my links, mind you…you don’t have to buy the item you click on, you can purchase anything you like…and I make a small commission at NO extra charge to you! It just helps me to keep creating fresh content! ????????

Materials:

  • Yarn of your choice in as many colors as you would like
  • 4 Dowel rods – 1/4″ x 48″
  • Drill and drill bit
  • Twine – I used a little more heavy duty one than what you may get in the gift wrap section per say!
  • Hot glue gun Affiliate linkย  – this cordless glue gun is on my Christmas list! Lol! (you only need a glue gun if attaching garland of some sort)
  • Scissors
  • marker
  • 1/2″ wood beads (mine are from Hobby Lobby but I found this great set on Amazon that contains enough of both sizes – Affiliate link)
  • 3/4″ wood beads
  • 6-10 tiny wooden clothespins

Cut List:

  • 1 dowel rod cut @ 3″
  • 6″
  • 9″
  • 12″
  • 15″
  • 18″
  • 21″
  • 24″

I get excited when I can create something with my hands that I can enjoy my family while doing it…and that is just what this craft is so great for! You can invite your girlfriends over to make them with you or get your mom and sister together! Or just catch up on your favorite Netflix series while binging on wine and chocolate…no one is judging here! ????

Alright, after you have gathered all your supplies, cut the dowel rods down to size!

DIY Tree Card Holder Made of Tassels

Measure 3/4″ in from each edge and place a mark. This will be where you will drill your hole for the twine which we will tie the tree together with at the end.

DIY Tree Card Holder Made of Tassels

Not sure why that photo is so fuzzy? ???? I’m measuring though I promise! ????

Drill your holes in each end, making sure that you are drilling the same direction on each end!

DIY Tree Card Holder Made of Tassels

Now you can start making your tassels. I didn’t do any measuring of the yarn for the tassels, I simply left the yarn attached to the spool (is that even what it is called? Ball? Spool? Skein? I am not sure…I will just say spool and you just know what I mean, okay?????). I kept looping it over the dowel rod until it had 10 loops on each side and then left the single strand on the opposite side of where I started the single strand (see video if that doesn’t make sense) I then cut the yarn and cut another piece roughly 10″ or so long and tied the tassel! Trim the tassel to your desired length…mine measure about 3″ from the tie…but again, they were not measured, just roughly eyeballed based off the one next to it!

Don’t mind my strange faces…the photos were exported from the video!????

That’s pretty much it! You just repeat this over and over and over again until you fill up your dowel rods! There is 1 tassel on the first dowel that measured 3″, I did 3 tassels on the 5″ dowel, 5, 7, 9 and so on…adding 2 to each rod as they went up in size! So on the 24″ dowel rod there was 15 tassels!

Tying the Tassel Tree Together

After all your beautiful tassels are tied, now you have to tie all of the dowels together with the twine! I cut two separate pieces of twine and started from the bottom and went up. I tied them together at the top once they were all knotted where they needed to be.

Starting at the largest dowel rod (the bottom of the tree) tie knots at one end of each piece of twine and thread the twine trough the holes in the dowel rod. I did the both ends of the dowel at the same time before moving on to the next dowel.

DIY Tree Card Holder Made of Tassels

Now you will need to somewhat measure here to make sure you don’t have 5 inches between one dowel and 2 between another! Lol! Mine were roughly 3 1/2″ from dowel to dowel. After measuring, I marked my twine where I needed the knot to be, and tied it there. Sometimes you may have to tie and untie because it sits wrong…no worries, I had to do this a number of times! ????

Once you get the knot tied at the right place, feed the twine through the hole and repeat that process to get the next one properly tied. Once you make your way to the top, just tie the two strings together a couple inches above the last dowel! Woohoo! The hard part is over! Now you just have to decide what amenities you would like your tree to have!

DIY Tree Card Holder Made of Tassels

Making the DIY Bead Garland

After completing the tassels on your tree, you can leave it as is…which is beautiful…or you can add a diy bead garland! Or if you are lucky enough to find one already made for cheap then you can use that instead! But of course I couldn’t manage to find one, so I had to make mine!

I bought the beads while they were 30% off at Hobby Lobby. Which I used 5 bags of the 1/2″ and 2 bags of the 3/4″ beads. So all in all the beads cost me 9.75 and the twine I already had, but it was like 3.99 for a really large spool when I bought it!

Using twine on the beads is not the easiest since twine cannot be burned to make it stay together on the end. I used nail polish which worked pretty well for a while, but then I would have to still cut a fresh end. Make sure to leave plenty extra for this. I actually didn’t cut mine until after I was done, I left it attached to the spool so I could make sure I had enough!

I started with (10) 1/2″ beads in a row, then added (1) 3/4″ bead and continued that pattern all the way down.ย  You can definitely change the pattern and make it your own! I would LOVE to see it if you do!ย ????

Once I had enough beads on my garland, I tied a knot in one end and made a loop in the end so I could slide it onto the bottom dowel and see how I wanted to drape it. After messing with it for a while, I was able to find a way I liked it and then I just hot glued the twine to the back side of the dowel!

DIY Tree Card Holder Made of Tassels

After completing the bead garland, I came back and added the tiny clothespins to the 3/4″ beads with a little hot glue! Viola! Just make sure that the clothespins are glued in the direction you want your card to hang!
