Faux Shiplap Welcome Sign and Organizer

January 25, 2019 by Cara Leave a Comment

Hey everyone! With all this Marie Kondo organizational craziness going around…Lol…I thought I should create a designated key drop spot with room for a couple other important items, but not enough room that everything gets dumped there! Do you have a spot like that in your house, where everyone just seems to empty their pockets but never pick anything up from? ???? We sure do, and it happens to be the entryway table that you see AS SOON AS you walk in the door! ???? I’m hoping though that this cute little faux shiplap welcome sign and organizer will keep us from using the entryway table a drop spot! Keys will go on the sign and important stuff in the basket!

DIY Faux Shiplap Welcome Sign and Organizer

It was a fun afternoon project that I didn’t have to cuss during, not even once! ???? That means it’s a project for anyone and everyone! No matter your skill level or tool arsenal you should easily be able to recreate this! I mean I didn’t even scroll the welcome…I bought it at Hobby Lobby! I could have scrolled it, but it probably wouldn’t look that good and for 6 bucks, I really couldn’t justify cutting it myself! Lol! And the basket, obviously purchased at Hobby Lobby as well!

DIY Faux Shiplap Welcome Sign and Organizer

I’m just going to jump right in and explain this simple little build that way you can get started as well, I mean I know you probably have a whole closet full of close that need folded into a tent! ???? I’m not making fun either…I really have cleaned out my clothes and thanked them already…and then folded them into tents…no shame here! ????

Materials:

  • 1 -1/2″ 2×4 project panel at Home Depot
  • 1 – 1x2x10
  • welcome word sign
  • wall basket of your choice
  • wood glue
  • screws
  • kreg jig
  • miter saw
  • table saw or circular saw

Once you have gathered your supplies, I cut down my 2×4 sheet, although you could keep it that large if you like! I cut mine down to 29 3/4″ because that is as large as my wall could handle with the added 3″ of the frame!

I then used the table saw to cut lines into the plywood but not all the way through the plywood. If you are using a table saw or circular saw, you will adjust the blade to where it is only cutting 1/8″ deep.

The camera focused more on my board than the blade but you can kind of see how low the blade is!

I ran it through every 5 3/4″ or so to create the faux shiplap look.

Using the Kreg Jig drill holes along the back edges of the plywood on all sides. They will be drilled at 1/2″ depth and you will need 1″ screws to attach later.

Now setting your miter saw to 45 degrees off square, you can cut your frame. If you prefer, you could just do straight cuts and create the frame as well! Totally up to you! Tight miters sure do look good though! ???? Measure the sides and cut accordingly! I painted the plywood white and stained my frame boards before attaching them! So once I flipped it over, it was ready for decorations!

Now add your decor to the front! I spray painted the welcome sign as it was white when I bought it and just super glued it on! I placed two screws to hang the basket on as it had screw holes already!

Easy peasy! Now you can have a tidied entryway too! Well, we will see how it works! ????

Hope you have a wonderful day and Happy Building!

DIY Small Modern Bench

November 13, 2018 by Cara Leave a Comment

Hey everyone! I’m putting the finishing touches on my kitchen so that I can post it on Monday! Can you believe it, my kitchen is actually almost finished?! I know, I won’t believe it either…until I see it posted! ???? But, in the meantime while I’m putting the final touches on the kitchen, I wanted to give you a little something to keep you occupied! Here’s a quick little build that is so cute and inexpensive, I give you the plans for this Diy Small Modern Bench! I saw a larger version of this on Joanna Gaines’ Instagram feed, I’m sure her bench is an actual antique but I love my little replica!

DIY Small Modern Bench

I love this little bench so much, I was able to build it from first cut to stain…meaning completed…in just 3 hours! So, naturally I built the larger one too (the plans will be live for it Thursday-ish)! Yeah, I needed a quick couple of builds to make me feel productive, since it seems everyone else in the world can complete whole home renovations in a month and I can’t renovate one room within one year! Lol! Anyway, I created both plans because I didn’t have room for the larger bench, but then I realized I could totally use it at my dining table since I still haven’t built the matching bench to the Restoration Hardware Table I built 2 YEARS AGO! ???? Yeah, I am a sloth when it comes to getting stuff done! I should have named my blog The Sloth’s Workshop! ????????????

Enough about me, let’s get this bench built!

Building the Small Modern Bench

This build is a breath of fresh air if you are looking for some instant gratification! Lol! It is super cute, but takes so little materials and time! The perfect little pre-holiday build! Let’s get started!

Step 1

Start by cutting your 1×12 down to 30″. You can sand it and have it ready to go when the legs are built!

Step 2

Cut all the mitered boards listed in the cut list and build the legs. Use pocket holes drilled at 3/4″ deep and use wood glue along with 1 1/4″ screws to attach. You will build two of the legs shown below.

DIY Small Modern Bench

Notice the pocket holes that are drilled at the top going up into nothing, this will allow the attachment to the 1×12 in the next steps!

Step 3

Attach the legs to the 1×12.

DIY Small Modern Bench

Make sure again to use plenty of glue!

Step 4

Add the stretchers between the legs. They are cut at 28 1/2″ and pocket holed on the ends and along the top. Using the same 3/4″ drilled holes and 1 1/4″ screws with wood glue to attach!

Step 5

Add the stretchers along the bottom of the legs! They are also cut at 28 1/2″ and pocket holed only on the ends of the boards to attach to the legs…I was so excited at this point, I kinda forgot to take pictures! ???? I know you can manage it though by looking at the finished product! I have total faith in your abilities! ???? I raised my stretcher up 1 1/2″ on the front and back, which is slightly higher than the bottom stretcher of the leg…if that makes sense!

Step 6

Sand and finish in the way your heart desires! I used Old Barn Milkpaint in Weathered to stain mine! I cannot rave about this stain enough! It is nontoxic so I can stain in the comforts of my house when it is super hot or super cold outside, which is a HUGE plus for me! Anndddd, this color is perfection…I mean when it’s not clashing with my floor! Lol! I have a rug that is going to go under it here so it won’t clash with the floor any longer! ????

I enjoyed this little project so much that I had to build the bigger version too…originally I was just going to offer y’all the plans but I had to build it! Lol! So here are the plans for the Large Modern Bench!

Hope you build one…it would make a great holiday gift for a family member, I know I would still love to receive something like this as a gift even though I can build my own!
